2011 Man of the Year: Daniel Craig

SlyMagazine.com names our first Man of the Year – actor Daniel Craig. With a year of well pressed movies including Dream House, Adventures of TinTin, Cowboys & Aliens, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and another 007 film on its way, Craig managed to appear everywhere promoting his movies and nowhere speaking of his private life. He is a nut we would love to crack.

Daniel Craig is the sort of man that women hope to marry – unwavering in ideals, committed, and mysterious with rugged good looks that make Steve McQueen look like a Dolce & Gabbana model. He is the perfect storm. Clever and intriguing, his earnest for privacy is a clue of his intelligence particularly while starring in a grand number of films this year with some amazing co-stars – Olivia Wilde – one of our top 10 celebrity “shoe game” of 2011 lister; Rooney Mara – our Lady of the Moment; Naomi Watts; and Rachel Weisz… we will get back to Weisz in a moment.

I think there’s a lot to be said for keeping your own counsel, Craig tells GQ UK. You can’t buy it back. You can’t buy your privacy back. ‘Ooh, I want to be alone. ‘F— you. We’ve been in your living room. We were at your birth. You filmed it for us and showed us the placenta, and now you want some privacy?

We discover two things about the 43 year-old star, Craig speaks his mind …and he watches the Kardashians – quite down-to-earth, wouldn’t you say? Despite his remark on reality stars: ’What, you mean all I have to do is behave like a f—ing idiot on television and then you’ll pay me millions?’ He is obviously tuning in.

So tell us your thoughts, Craig, on Kim and Kris Humphries’ short marriage? On second thought, scrap that.

It is one of the things we love about Daniel Craig, his honesty.

In addition to being what we call “steady”, you can rely on Craig to deliver intense performances –  the clear blue eyes matched with a strong, serious regard, and the pursed lips, surely help deliver the intensity. It is something that keeps us completely smitten over the Brit (have you seen Munich?) and looking forward to another 007 film. Craig has been quoted as not being “enthusiastic” about taking on the starring role in the James Bond franchise, at first, which had the markings of a cynical man. Later this year,  he is quoted as stating that he is not a cynical man which is a relief. Who loves a cynic?

On his demeanor, The Guardian’s Ryan Gilbey offers this on his impression of Craig at an interview:

The surprise upon meeting Daniel Craig is his gentleness…he goes beyond politeness: he’s relaxed, even goofy, and quick to laugh, especially at himself. The blue eyes, which can seem glacial in his closeups as Bond, are warm and zesty. His features are as deeply etched as the grooves of a wood carving; the hair is sandy-coloured and fluffy. What else? There’s the genuine embarrassment when he finds he has stumbled into mentioning his charity work.

Charity work is a prerequisite to winning our hearts. One should care.

These characteristics coupled with Craig’s unconventional good looks has us smitten with the well dressed bloke (Craig was named best dressed by GQ in 2008 and made GQ’s 2011 best dressed short list) and would certainly win the heart of his Dream House co-star Rachel Weisz. The two were wed in front of 4 people in New York last June – Craig’s 18 year-old daughter, Ella; Weisz’s 4 year old son, Henry; and two friends. Truly, we would not expect it to go any other way for our favorite dramatic actor.
