Couture 2012: A Show of Shoes…

The couture shows continue to defy the claims that the collections are a dwindling event in Paris this week with collections like Bouchra Jarrar, Basil Soda, and Giambattista Valli carrying on the torch for the art.

We like to place a magnifying glass on what is happening at foot on the runways. The shoes on the couture runways were classic and dainty without the surreal effect of past designs we have seen at houses like Christian Dior or John Galliano. So, there was disappointment all around.

The most stunning shoe designs were presented at the Versace show – a couture collection for the first time in nearly 10 years for the house. The motif? Glam warrior – yes, this sensibility continues to live on. The glam warrior came in long, lady amazon figures at the Versace couture show. The shoes made the same alluring statement as the frocks and gowns of feminine armor that were presented. The leather over-the-knee forms were just as a robust statement as the lace, metal shield attached to the platform sandals. The shielded evening sandal begs for a debut at a red carpet on, say, Cameron Diaz for the Oscars? The daring star was in attendance at the couture show along with Diane Kruger and Abbie Cornish. Diaz certainly has the fashion gumption to make the statement. Otherwise, the Met Costume Gala would be a suitable venue.
